SPEC Releases SPECviewperf 2020 v3.0 Benchmark, Adds Linux Edition

The SPEC® Graphics Performance Characterization (SPECgpc) group put tremendous effort into updating the SPECviewperf® benchmarks over the last year, and I'm excited today to discuss some of the new features. The SPECviewperf® 2020 v3.0 benchmark and the SPECviewperf® 2020 v3.0 Linux Edition benchmark - industry-standard benchmarks for measuring graphics performance based on professional applications - measure the 3D graphics performance of systems running under the OpenGL and DirectX application programming interfaces. The benchmark workloads, called viewsets, represent graphics content and behavior from actual workstation-class applications, without the need to install the applications themselves.

These benchmarks are vital to the industry, enabling vendors to assess the performance capabilities of their systems using real-world workloads, while enabling buyers to ensure they purchase the right systems for their needs. While the SPECviewperf 2020 v3.0 benchmark, which runs on Microsoft Windows, has been updated several times over the last few years, the Linux Edition had not been updated since the SPECviewperf 13 Linux Edition benchmark, so Iā€™m particularly excited that the Linux community now has access to this major new benchmark.

The viewsets in the SPECviewperf 2020 v3.0 Linux Edition benchmark represent the following applications: Maya for media and entertainment, Catia, Creo, NX and Solidworks for CAD/CAM. The benchmark also includes two viewsets representing professional energy and medical applications.

Other significant updates in the SPECviewperf 2020 v3.0 Linux Edition benchmark include the following:

  • Updated models are included in the following viewsets: catia-06, creo-03, medical-03, and solidworks-07
  • User interface and benchmark management improvements include:
    • Official runs of all viewsets at both 2K and 4K resolution - Enables users to compare performance at the different resolutions
    • Updated NW.js release ā€“ Includes fixes for improved performance, security and quality
    • Robust interrogation and assessment of underlying hardware - Allows users to view hardware specifications when comparing results
    • New results manager ā€“ Makes it easy to package results for submission, review past results, archive and delete past results, and more
    • Clickable thumbnails of the subtest screen grabs now included in the HTML results page of each viewset ā€“ Makes it easier to review results in a web browser
  • Added support for running benchmarks from a command-line with options - via the RunViewperf launcher
  • Viewsets are now individually downloaded and may be independently installed and removed using the new "Manage Viewsets" utility
  • The SPECviewperf 2020 v3.0 Linux Edition benchmark is installed via a .deb package rather than a compressed tar archive

The SPECviewperf 2020 v3.0 benchmark for Windows features an updated Solidworks-07 viewset that uses the same viewport rendering modes in both 4K and 2K resolutions. Further, the viewsets are now individually downloaded and may be independently installed and removed using the new "Manage Viewsets" utility.
