The Cougar 3000 represents ONStor's family of scalable clustered NAS gateway systems targeted at high-end enterprise file serving environments. Cougar 3000 systems are available in two models: Cougar 3510 & Cougar 3310. These systems are based on 64-bit, multi-core network processors which feature system-on-a-chip design, with integrated i/o and hyper-transport interconnects for high data throughput at significantly lower power consumption. Each Cougar 3000 system supports up to four 4Gb Fibre Channel and four Gigabit Ethernet ports in a highly available configuration within a compact 1U form factor. Cougar 3000 systems are architected to scale out to multiple NAS gateways in a single cluster and deliver high performance and capacity scaling across a broad range of storage systems.

Each of the 16 filesystems was striped over 7 drives utilizing RAID-0.

A standard Fujitsu ETERNUS4000 model 500 storage system was utilized. Eight shelves of 15 Fibre Channel drives (15K RPM) each were available. Of the 120 drives, 112 were used for the file system and 4 were used for Fujitsu code and configuration as well as performance, event, and error logs. In addition, space on the 4 drives was used for storing cache data in the event of power failure. The space on the drives is necessary for the Fujitsu ETERNUS4000 to operate correctly. The Cougar used space on 2 of the 4 disks for maintenance and core dump files. Allocation of this spece is recommended but not mandatory for the Cougar to be functional. Each of the 16 file systems was striped over its own set of 7 disk drives. Eight file systems were assigned to Controller Module 0 and the other 8 to Controller Module 1. The 3510 Cougar blade was connected to both Controller Modules during the SPEC test. The Cougar Gateway utilized the Fujitsu storage default settings including Read Cache, Write Cache, Write Cache Mirroring, and 64 KB stripe size.

Network Configuration Notes
A Dell PowerConnect 6248 ethernet switch (48 ports, 184 Gb backplane) was utilized. The network interfaces used standard frames.
Benchmark Network
The Cougar 3510 was connected to the Dell switch via GbE connections (4 ports). The 4 connections were aggregated at the switch and the Cougar blade. Each of the 3 clients was connected to the Dell switch with a 1 GbE connection.

Each Cougar 3510 contains one processing blade. The blade has 2 physical processors (Broadcom SiByte 1480 - four processing cores per chip) for data path processing (TCP/IP, NFS, CIFS, filesystem) and 1 physical processor (Broadcom SiByte 1125 - one processing core per chip) for operating system management and control. The data path utilizes 6 of the 8 available Broadcom SiByte 1480 cores. The other 2 cores were unused. The blade also has four Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 4Gb/s Fibre Channel ports.

Memory Notes
Each Cougar 3510 NAS blade has 8 GB of memory for the data path (protocol and file system operations) and 1 GB of memory for operating system management and control.
Stable Storage
Stable storage in the Fujitsu ETERNUS4000 disk system consists of DDR2 RAM cache with a backup system utilizing batteries and disk drives. Write data is mirrored on the 2 controller caches. In the event of power failure, the battery backed system writes cache data to system disk drives. Battery capacity is sufficient to write data from full caches to disk with some safety margin. After power has been restored, the cache data is retrived from the system disks. In the event of a battery fault, the controller goes into "write through" mode and write caching is disabled. Data is stored in stable storage before NFS stable write and commit operations are acknowledged. The Cougar 3510 does not have any stable storage in the data path.

Uniform Access Rule Compliance
Thirty-two processes were utilized on each load generating client. The ONStor Cougar 3510 Gateway had one blade running 1 virtual server and 16 file systems. The blade was configured with 1 logical interface to the clients (an aggregation of four GbE interfaces). To satisfy the uniform access rule, each client had 32 mount points, 2 for each of the 16 file systems in the Cougar 3510 Gateway. Thus each client's load was evenly distributed over the 16 file systems. On the storage side, the virtual server could access any of the raid groups via either of the 2 storage controllers.
