2013

03/22/2013: - An updated PTDaemon, V1.6.0 is now available. This release adds support for the Yokogawa WT310, two iButtonLink temperature sensors, and 3-phase power measurement support. Additional stability enhancements and support for non-standard baud rates have also been added, among other changes. Users of SPECpower_ssj2008 and the SERT tool are encouraged to download and apply the update. All SPECpower_ssj2008 submissions on or after September 18th, 2013 must be made with v1.6.0 of PTDaemon.

03/13/2013: - SPEC announces the release of SPECapc for SolidWorks 2013™. The benchmark includes 10 new models, each of which is exercised with 12 tests. Models were selected from the SolidWorks user community, with an emphasis on real-world datasets that can be distributed in the public domain. The benchmark is available in versions for both commercial and personal use.

02/26/2013: - SPEC announces the release of the Server Efficiency Rating Tool (SERT). It is intended to measure server energy efficiency, initially as part of the second generation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR for Computer Servers program. Designed to be simple to configure and use via a comprehensive graphical user interface, the SERT uses a set of synthetic worklets to test discrete system components such as processors, memory and storage, providing detailed power consumption data at different load levels.

01/25/2013: - SPEC's Research Group has selected Shicong Meng from the Georgia Institute of Technology as the winner of the 2012 SPEC Distinguished Dissertation Award, which will be awarded at the ICPE 2013 International Conference. The Distinguished Dissertation Award is given to a Ph.D. student whose thesis is regarded to be an exceptional, innovative contribution in the scope of the SPEC Research Group.

01/23/2013: - SPEC announces the release of SPECjbb2013, developed from the ground up to measure performance based on the latest Java application features. It is expected to be used widely by all those interested in Java server performance, including JVM vendors, hardware developers, Java application developers, researchers and members of the academic community. New features include support for multiple run configurations, exercise of new Java 7 features, and support for virtualization and cloud environments.

2012

12/13/2012: - An updated PTDaemon, V1.5.0 is now available. This release adds support for multichannel and multiphase measurements on suitably configured power analyzers, together with a comprehensive set of fixes and enhancements across the accepted set of power analyzers. SPECpower_ssj2008 users are encouraged to download and apply the update. All SPECpower_ssj2008 submissions on or after June 12th, 2013 must be made with v1.5.0 of PTDaemon.

12/11/2012: - A SERT Training/Demo session will be run in conjunction with the SPEC Annual and Joint Meeting in Austin, TX. This session will take place on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM CST at the Austin Convention Center. You must register in order to attend the demo. Upon completion of the session, attendees will receive a Certificate of Participation.

11/14/2012: - A new Workstation Performance Characterization (SPECwpc) project group has become part of SPEC's Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (SPEC/GWPG). SPECwpc joins two other benchmarking project groups — SPECapc and SPECgpc — operating under the SPEC/GWPG umbrella. The newest SPEC/GWPG project group is creating a benchmark that measures the performance of workstations running algorithms used in popular applications, but without requiring the full application and associated licensing to be installed on the system under test. 11/13/2012: - Alan Adamson, member of the SPEC Board of Directors, passed away on October 31, 2012. In addition to his role as a board member, Alan had served as chair of the Java subcommittee and the OSG Steering Committee. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the SPEC Research Group and the ICPE series of joint conferences with ACM.

10/26/2012: - SPEC's Research Group has formed a new working group called "Benchmarking Architectures for Intrusion Detection in Virtualized Environments" whose mission is to foster and to facilitate innovative research in computer system and network intrusion detection, with special attention given to benchmarking intrusion detection systems in virtualized cloud environments. 10/17/2012: - SPEC's High-Performance Group (SPEC/HPG) has released an updated benchmark for measuring performance using applications based on the OpenMP 3.1 standard for shared-memory parallel processing. The benchmark, called SPEC OMP2012, includes an optional metric for measuring energy consumption. Existing licensees of the OMP2001 benchmark qualify for discounted upgrade pricing to OMP2012.

09/11/2012: - SPEC's Research Group, as part of their mission to foster the exchange of knowledge and experiences between industry and academia in the field of quantitative system evaluation and analysis, has published the first issue of the Research Group Newsletter. This regular publication will provide you with information on latest developments, news and announcements relevant to the benchmarking and quantitative system evaluation communities.

08/08/2012: - SPECapc announces the release of the SPECapc for Autodesk Maya 2012 benchmark. The benchmark software is available as a free download for Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit platforms.

07/26/2012: - SPECpower_ssj2008 V1.12 is now available. This is a point release which includes updates to the reporter, PTDaemon, and support for a new analyzer. For a list of the latest changes, see the release notes. Starting December 11, 2012, all results must be published using V1.12. Current licensees of previous versions of the software are eligible to receive a free upgrade to V1.12 by contacting SPEC.

07/18/2012: - Call for Papers, ICPE 2013: SPEC announces a call for papers for the 4th ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering, to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 21-24, 2013. Submissions are invited in any of five tracks: Research; Industrial Applications and Experience; Posters and Demos; Tutorials; and Work-in-Progress and Vision Papers. Paper submission dates vary by track; please see the ICPE website for further details.

06/13/2012: - SPEC's Open Systems Group (OSG) has formed a new Cloud group to work in cooperation with other SPEC committees and subcommittees to define cloud benchmark methodologies, determine and recommend application workloads, identify cloud metrics for existing SPEC benchmarks, and develop new cloud benchmarks. Participation from cloud providers and users is welcomed.

06/12/2012: - SPEC is seeking beta testers for the Server Efficiency Rating Tool. Measurement and reporting via the SERT will be required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR for Servers v2.0 specification. SERT Beta-2 testing is open to anyone who has a SPEC-accepted power analyzer and temperature sensor, signs a beta license, and commits to providing feedback.

06/04/2012: - SPEC's Application Performance Characterization project group announces the release of SPECapc for PTC Creo® 2.0. The benchmark provides eight workflows that exercise all aspects of system performance when running the popular application. Composite scores are generated for graphics, shaded graphics, wireframe graphics, CPU and I/O performance.

05/23/2012: - An updated PTDaemon, V1.4.2, for SPECpower_ssj2008 has been released. SPECpower_ssj2008 users are encouraged to download and apply the update. All SPECpower_ssj2008 submissions on or after November 14th, 2012 must be made with v1.4.2 of PTDaemon. No further SPECpower_ssj2008 submissions with Solaris running on either an x86 or SPARC-based Controller will be accepted after August 8th, 2012.

04/11/2012: - SPEC's Application Performance Characterization (SPECapc) project group has released SPECapc for Siemens NX 6. The benchmark is freely available for download.

04/05/2012: - SPECjEnterprise2010 v1.03 is now available. This update includes performance-neutral changes to address known issues. Beginning May 1, 2012, all result submissions must be made using version 1.03. Licensees of earlier versions of the SPECjEnterprise2010 software may request a free update to 1.03 by contacting SPEC.

03/26/2012: - ICPE 2012, the Third ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering, will be held April 22-25 in Boston, MA. Advance registration for the technical program and tutorials ends on April 15.

02/07/2012: - SPEC's Research Group (SPEC RG) opens a repository of peer-reviewed tools for quantitative system evaluation and analysis. As a contribution to the community, SPEC RG addresses the need for a collection of tools that have undergone a thorough review process by multiple independent experts to ensure high quality, maturity and relevance.

01/18/2012: - SPEC is beginning investigation of a proposed new benchmark that would measure compute-intensive performance of handheld devices such as tablets and smart phones. The first face-to-face meeting in the exploratory process will be held Monday morning, January 30, in San Jose, California. Anyone interested in attending this meeting or participating in the handheld working group should contact SPEC at corporate@spec.org for more information and registration.

01/04/2012: - SPEC's Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (SPEC/GWPG) is seeking applications, algorithms and workloads for a proposed workstation performance benchmark.

01/03/2012: - Reminder: The SPECweb2005 and SPECweb2009 benchmarks will be retired on January 12. After that date, no further result submissions for publication will be accepted and technical support for the software will end. Please see the retirement notice for information regarding post-retirement publication of results independently of SPEC.

12/22/2011: - Luk Van Ertvelde of Ghent University and Kai Sachs of TU Darmstadt first to win new SPEC Distinguished Dissertation Award.

12/15/2011: - REMINDER: Starting at 3AM Eastern US Time on December 20, 2011, SPEC will stop accepting SPEC CPU2006 V1.1 results for publication on the SPEC website; at that point SPEC will only accept SPEC CPU2006 V1.2 results. 09/28/2011 - SPEC releases first beta of Server Efficiency Rating Tool (SERT)

09/13/2011 - SPECpower_ssj2008 V1.11 has been released. This update includes several enhancements and code changes to all benchmark components, documentation updates, and run and reporting rules enhancements. All SPECpower_ssj2008 results published after December 13, 2011 must use version 1.11. All existing licensees will receive a notice on how to get a free update.

09/07/2011 - SPEC CPU2006 V1.2 has been released. Changes in this version address additional tools and features to improve results checking/automation, updated tools sets for recent operating changes, porting changes for new environments and updates to address bugs and errata. These changes are performance neutral and v1.2 results are comparable to previous SPEC CPU2006 the SPEC office with any questions.

09/06/2011 - SPEC announces the release of SPECsip_Infrastructure2011, designed to evaluate a system's ability to act as a SIP server supporting a particular SIP application. The application modeled is a VoIP deployment for an enterprise, telco, or service provider, where the SIP server performs proxying and registration.

08/09/2011 - The SPECmail2001 and SPECmail2009 benchmarks will be retired on 31 October 2011. The SPECweb2005 and SPECweb2009 benchmarks will be retired on 12 January 2012. Benchmark sales, support, and result publication will be affected.

08/09/2011 - The Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (SPEC/GWPG) announces a new application-level benchmark for Autodesk Maya 2012 and outlines a new vision for its SPECviewperf performance evaluation software. For details, please see the press release.

07/20/2011 - Call-for-Nominations: SPEC Benchmarking Research PhD Award 2011; an exceptional, innovative contribution in the scope of SPEC's Research Group.

07/06/2011 - SPEC announces the release of SPECapc for 3ds Max 2011. The software is available in two versions: the Professional version which is required for any organization submitting results for publication on the SPEC web site or distributed to the public, and the Personal version, which provides a subset of the professional tests for personal use only. Both versions are now available for purchase and download.

05/23/2011 - SPECvirt_sc2010 v1.01 has been released. Changes in this version consist of minor bug fixes, improvements and clarifications in documentation and run and reporting rules. Changes are performance neutral and v1.01 results are comparable to v1.0 results. Starting August 10, 2011, all result submissions must use v1.01. Existing licensees may request a free v1.01 CD by sending email to info@spec.org.

03/15/2011 - SPEC's Research Group has been formed to develop standard scenarios and workloads for emerging technologies and applications. It is designed to encourage exchange among representatives from industry, academia and research institutes. For further information, see http://research.spec.org/.

02/08/2011 - SPEC mourns the loss of Larry Gray, longtime SPEC treasurer and technical contributor, who passed away on January 30, 2011.

2010

12/09/2010 - SPECweb2009 v1.20 is now available. This update includes performance neutral updates and bug fixes. Licensees of earlier versions of the SPECweb2009 software may request a free update to 1.20 by contacting SPEC.

12/09/2010 - SPECjEnterprise2010 v1.02 is now available. This update includes performance-neutral workload changes to address known issues. Licensees of earlier versions of the SPECjEnterprise2010 software may request a free update to 1.02 by contacting SPEC.

11/23/2010 - SPECjAppServer2004 is being retired in favor of its successor, SPECjEnterprise2010. New result submissions will be accepted through November 30, 2010. After that time, no further submissions will be accepted and the benchmark will be retired.

09/22/2010 - The program for the October 8, 2010 International SPEC Benchmark Workshop 2010 in Paderborn, Germany is available and registration is now open. Registration is free and includes all beverages and a lunch, but advance registration is requested.

07/14/2010 - SPEC announces the release of SPECvirt_sc2010, SPEC's first benchmark addressing performance evaluation of datacenter servers used in virtualized server consolidation. SPECvirt_sc2010 measures the end-to-end performance of all system components including the hardware, virtualization platform, and the virtualized guest operating system and application software.

07/13/2010 - SPEC announces a call for papers for the 2011 ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE). Please see the call for papers for deadlines for the various submission tracks and tutorial proposals.

06/23/2010 - SPECgpc announces the release of SPECviewperf® 11, now available for download or on DVD.

06/21/2010 - The submission deadline for papers for the October 2010 Benchmark Workshop has been extended from June 14 to June 28.

05/17/2010 - SPEC announces the release of SPECmail2009 v1.01. This update addresses an existing issue with international date formats and more robust IMAP4 server interactions. Current SPECmail2009 licensees may request a free upgrade by contacting SPEC.

03/01/2010 - A new version, 1.3.10, of SPEC's PTDaemon is now available. Please see the SPECpower_ssj2008 Accepted Measurement Devices page for updated power analyzer support and instructions for updating your PTDaemon binary to the latest version.

02/02/2010 - SPEC announces the release of MPI2007 v2.0, which adds the MPIL2007 suite to allow testing up to 2048 ranks. For further information on new and updated features, please see the list of changes in v2.0.

01/14/2010 - SPEC announces the release of SPECweb2005 v1.30. This update adds support for ASPX scripts to the existing JSP and PHP support. Current SPECweb2005 licensees may request a free upgrade.

2009

12/09/2009 - Registration is still open for the first joint WOSP/SIPEW International Conference on Performance Engineering, being held in cooperation with ACM SIGSOFT and ACM SIGMETRICS, from January 28-30, 2010. See http://www.wosp-sipew.org/ for further information.

12/03/2009 - SPEC announces the release of SPECjEnterprise2010. This benchmark measures full-system performance for Java Enterprise Edition 5 or later application servers, databases and supporting infrastructure and expands the scope of the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark.

10/22/2009 - SPEC has released a new version of the SPECweb2009 benchmark. The updated version 1.10 includes new ASPX scripts in addition to the previously included PHP and JSP based scripts. Results from using each of these types of scripts will have different metric names and will be tabulated separately.

09/09/2009 - SPEC has formed a new working group to develop standard methods of measuring performance for typical middleware, database and hardware deployments of applications based on the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).

09/04/2009 - The SPECpower committee declares its intent to design, develop and deliver a next generation tool set that will measure and evaluate the performance and power of computer servers over a wider spectrum of functionality. The tool set will have the potential to be adopted by the EPA for use in the US EPA Server Energy Star program and to form a solid basis for the next generation SPECpower benchmark.

07/08/2009 - SPEC/GWPG announces the release of the SPECapc for Maya® 2009 benchmark, available now for download.

07/06/2009 - The submission deadline for papers and tutorial proposals for the First Joint WOSP/SIPEW International Conference on Performance Engineering has been extended to July 21. See http://www.wosp-sipew.org/ for further information.

06/29/2009 - The SPEC CPU Benchmark Search program is currently accepting submissions of applications that could be used in the next SPEC CPU suite; submissions that are accepted by SPEC and are included in the next suite earn their submitters $5000 and a license for the new suite (when released).

06/05/2009 - SPEC announces the release of the SPECweb2009 web server performance benchmark suite. New with SPECweb2009 is a power workload, with measurements based on the SPECpower methodology, and a performance/power metric.

05/06/2009 - Announcing the First Joint WOSP/SIPEW International Conference on Performance Engineering, in cooperation with ACM SIGSOFT and ACM SIGMETRICS, to be held January 28-30, 2010. 04/17/2009 - SPEC's privacy policy has been updated. A list of recent changes, effective as of April 17, 2009, can be found in the policy statement.

04/15/2009 - SPEC announces blade server support with the release of SPECpower_ssj2008 1.10. This release adds several new capabilities including support for measuring multi-node (blade) servers, further automation of power measurement, support for multiple power analyzers, and a visual activity monitor which provides real-time graphic display of data collected while running the benchmark. This update will be provided on CD at no charge to existing licensees of the software.

04/06/2009 - SPEC announces the release of SPECapc for Lightwave 3D® v9.6. The benchmark is available now as a free download for Microsoft Windows XP and Vista 32- and 64-bit platforms.

03/10/2009 - SPEC announces the release of SPECmail2009, a new version of the enterprise mail server benchmark featuring a new workload, support for SSL/TLS encryption, and improved interoperability across different platforms. An initial set of results is available.

2008

12/30/2008 - The application deadline for student grants for attending the 2009 SPEC Benchmark Workshop has been extended from December 29, 2008 to January 9, 2009.

12/16/2008 - The program for the 2009 SPEC Benchmark Workshop is now available. There is no registration fee to attend, but advance registration is required.

11/11/2008 - SPEC CPU Benchmark Search program: SPEC is looking for applications that could be used in the next SPEC CPU suite; submissions that are accepted by SPEC and are included in the next suite earn their submitters $5000 and a license for the new suite (when released).

10/06/2008 - The deadline for paper submissions for the SPEC Benchmark Workshop 2009 to be held in Austin, Texas in January 2009 has been extended. The initial paper or extended abstract submission deadline is now October 15.

10/06/2008 - SPEC announces the release of SPEC MPI2007 V1.1. This release adds updates to benchmarks in order to improve portability and code correctness; improvements to report readability; clarifications and additions to the run and reporting rules; improvements to the documentation, including of the monitor hooks; and easier investigation of alternate sources or workloads. Results from V1.0 are comparable to those from V1.1. Beginning January 1, 2009 all SPEC MPI2007 submissions will require the use of version 1.1.

08/26/2008 - The submission dates for papers or extended abstracts for the SPEC Benchmark Workshop 2009 have been updated. The submission deadline is now October 3, 2008.

08/26/2008 - CPU2006 result submissions using V1.0.1 will be accepted until September 2. After that date, all submissions must be made using V1.1.

08/19/2008 - SPEC announces the release of SPECmail2008, designed to measure performance of enterprise mail servers compliant with SMTP and IMAP4 protocols. An initial set of results is available.

08/13/2008 - SPEC/GWPG announced a range of upcoming benchmarks at SIGGRAPH 2008. The new offerings will include a power-performance benchmark for workstations, a new version of SPECviewperf, and new and updated application benchmarks.

07/24/2008 - SPEC announces the release of SPECpower_ssj2008 V1.01. This release adds usability upgrades as well as updates to the Run and Reporting Rules, the Design documentation and SPEC's Power and Performance Methodology. Results from V1.00 are comparable to those from V1.01. Beginning September 10, 2008 all SPECpower_ssj2008 submissions will require the use of version 1.01.

06/03/2008 - SPEC announces the release of CPU2006 V1.1, adding usability and portability upgrades. Results from V1.1 are comparable to those from V1.0 and V1.0.1.

05/21/2008 - SPECgpc releases SPECviewperf 10 for Linux/Unix, available now for download.

05/20/2008 - The SPECweb committee has begun work on a new benchmark to measure power consumption for web servers.

05/07/2008 - SPEC announces the release of SPECjvm2008, a benchmark suite for measuring the performance of a Java Runtime Environment (JRE), containing several real life applications and benchmarks focusing on core java functionality. SPECjvm2008 is available as a free download.

03/19/2008 - SPEC announces the release of SPECsfs2008, designed to evaluate the speed and request-handling capabilities of file servers utilizing the NFSv3 and CIFS protocols. An initial set of benchmark results is available.

03/18/2008 - SPEC/GWPG has begun development of an industry-standard benchmark measuring power consumption in relation to performance for professional workstations.

2007

11/27/2007 - The deadline for submission of papers or extended abstracts for the 2008 Benchmark Workshop has been extended to Friday, December 7.

10/25/2007 - SPEC announces the release of SPECjms2007, a new benchmark designed to measure performance of enterprise messaging servers based on JMS (Java Message Service).

09/28/2007 - SPEC issues a call for papers for the 2008 Benchmark Workshop to be held January 27, 2008 in Millbrae, CA. The submission deadline for papers or extended abstracts is November 26, 2007.

09/12/2007 - SPEC's Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (GWPG) releases an updated SPECapc benchmark for UGS NX 4.

09/10/2007 - SPEC's Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (GWPG) invites parties interested in open source, freely-available graphics benchmarks for OpenGL ES to participate in a teleconference on Thursday, September 13, 2007 at 1:00 PM EDT.

09/06/2007 - SPEC's Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (GWPG) is looking for organizations interested in developing standardized, open-source graphics benchmarks for OpenGL ES.

08/07/2007 - SPEC's graphics performance group, formerly known as GPC, expands its scope; under the new charter, the renamed Graphics & Workstation Performance Group (GWPG) can investigate standardized benchmarking projects in areas such as OpenGL ES, rendering, digital video and photography, power consumption, and a full range of workstation applications.

07/18/2007 - SPECapc announces the release of SPECapc for 3ds Max 9, now available for download.

07/17/2007 - SPEC announces the release of MPI2007, designed to measure the performance of parallel computing systems and clusters running Message-Passing Interface (MPI) applications. Review the press release, or browse the first set of published results.

05/30/2007 - SPECopc announces the release of SPECViewperf 10. Review the first set of published results or download the software.

05/09/2007 - SPECapc releases SPECapc for SolidWorks 2007. Read the press release or download the benchmark.

04/06/2007 - The Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer Architecture (ACM SIGARCH) has published a series of 11 articles analyzing SPEC CPU2006. The articles are in the March 2007 issue of the newsletter Computer Architecture News, and are also available here.

03/27/2007 SPEC has formed a new subcommittee to develop standard methods of comparing performance for servers using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). A first version of the benchmark is being defined based on a SIP proxy server modeling an enterprise VoIP deployment.

03/05/2007 CPU2000 has been retired in favor of CPU2006. The software is still available for purchase, but technical support is no longer being offered and no further result submissions will be accepted for publication on this site; the final sets of CPU2000 results will be published in late March.

02/28/2007 SPEC's APC group releases the SPECapc benchmark for Solid Edge V19. A benchmark overview and the first set of published results are now available.

02/20/2007 SPECjAppServer2004 has been updated to version 1.08, with the addition of a new workload for use in research and development environments. The original workload remains unchanged, and SPECjAppServer2004 V1.08 results are comparable to results from previous versions of the benchmark. Comparisons of the research workload with SPECjAppServer2004 results are not permitted.

02/20/2007 CPU2000 result submissions will be accepted through 9:30 AM Eastern time on February 24. After that time, no further submissions will be accepted and the suite will be retired. All CPU2000 results submitted must have a corresponding CPU2006 result.

02/05/2007 SPEC will hold a free one-day benchmarking workshop on June 22, 2007 at the Technical University of Dresden. Paper submissions will be accepted until May 1, 2007.

02/05/2007 SPEChpc2002 is being retired. The last set of result submissions will be accepted for the review cycle beginning on June 20, 2007.

02/02/2007 The papers and slides from the January 2007 Benchmark Workshop in Austin, TX are now available for download.
